In the mix:010 / Lucas Benjamin

This month, the Selectors Assemble are proud to present a serious mix from super DJ Lucas Benjamin!

Lucas’ first encounters with music started at an early age. As the son of a DJ and musician he was automatically nourished with a broad selection of sounds. Although his true passion for music evolved when he started b-boying (breakdancing) at the age of twelve. Unifying his mind, body and soul with tribal drumbreaks, powerful funky horn sections and soulful vocals made him experience the true essence of jazz, soul and funk. Besides being a dancer he always had a great interest in music and it’s history. And so he spent hours and hours in record-stores, educating himself by analysing numerous lp’s and cd’s. His musical journey is a never-ending, continuous quest that has been taking him deep into African/Brazilian music but also explores the latest electronic experiments.

This combination of dancing and DJ-ing continued for a couple of years until there was a breaking point in 2011 where he got a serious injury.
Lucas decided to fully focus on DJ-ing. He quickly conquered the dance-scene and played at all the major events like Juste Debout, IBE and Summer Dance Forever. Besides dance battles Lucas started playing at all kinds of parties, festivals, radio and theatre shows. Which made him travel to places like Hawaï, Sydney, Sao Paulo, New York, Delhi, Berlin, Milan and Tel Aviv. In 2014 he lived in Japan for 3 months to discover the musical scene and culture of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe.

In 2014 he was asked by the renowned Wicked Jazz Sounds-movement in Amsterdam to join them. As the longest running night they’ve been doing their parties for 18 years now! You can frequently see/hear him play at their weekly Sunday night in Amsterdam or on Red Light Radio.

In 2015 he became a curator for 22tracks.com where he filled up the ‘Funk/Soul/Jazz’ playlist until they sadly had to quit their platform in 2017 due to various reasons. He then transformed the playlist with Wicked Jazz Sounds to ‘Tip44’ on Spotify, which is still updated every Monday with the latest releases.

In 2016 MORE BOUNCE was born, a monthly club-night and platform with the focus of pushing all kinds of Funk music. Around the same time Lucas also decided to start a record label with DJ Leroy Rey, they called it Wicked Wax and released about 10 records so far.

Then he joined the Dutch Ghetto Funk Collective crew because he felt it was needed to push the Funk-styles more in the dancing-scene, which made him one of the go-to DJs for Popping and Locking battles.

Throughout the years he developed his unique way of story-telling while taking the audience on an educational and uplifting journey.
