ALEX PHOUNTZI

Alex has been releasing music since the late 90s. Having initially started as a guitarist in a teenage funk band, a chance meeting and collaboration on an early Paul Dolby (aka Seiji) production sparked an interest in samplers and electronic music that was fuelled by London club scene and the music he had grown up listening to.

An early project of note was Neon Phusion, a 3 piece group alongside Afronaut and Kaidi Tatham, their debut album, ‘The Future Ain’t The Same As It Used To Be’ is widely regarded as being one of the first LP’s to lay the blueprint for the ensuing broken movement which took shape at the now legendary CoOp club night. Neon Phusion was one of many side projects of the then-fledgling music collective, Bugz In The Attic, of which Alex was an original member alongside Seiji, Daz-I-Kue, Kaidi Tatham, Scott Clifford, Afronaut, Matt Lord and Mark Force. The many high points included albums for FabricLive and a debut LP on V2 recordings as well as numerous remixes including, 4hero, Roisin Murphy, Amy Winehouse and Fela Kuti.

Having left the collective in 2008, he went on to start the Greenmoney production and label project with Leo Greenslade. The pair hosted a weekly show on MOS and Brooklyn radio and worked with and released music from numerous producers and artists including Terri Walker, Major Notes, and Roses Gabor as well as delivering remixes for acts such as Aswad, Zed Bias and Gyptian.

2013 saw the start of the NameBrandSound project with long-term friend, collaborator and legendary London producer, IG Culture. A debut EP was released on Ninja Tune offshoot Technicolor Records and was followed by releases on their own Arena Yard imprint. Two events in conjunction with Boiler Room saw the relaunch of the CoOp club night and laid the foundation for the ‘Selectors Assemble’ collective. Initially, this was realised with an EP release on First Word Records, this was followed by the launch of a brand new CoOp Presents label with IG Culture in 2018, as well as a monthly radio show on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM and club nights across London and beyond.
